Awarded for an officer incurring serious injury or death during exposure to hazardous actions or the apprehension of a suspect.

Awarded for the display of bravery or heroism above and beyond the normal demands of law enforcement service in response to a non-criminal situation involving extreme danger or a criminal situation involving danger to a lesser degree than required for the Medal of Valor.

Awarded for conspicuous performance of duties which brings significant status or recognition to the department.

Special Weapons and Tactics - Awarded to and worn by officers attached or posted to the SFPD SWAT teams.

Negotiator - Awarded on succesful completion of the crisis negotiation course (4 week course at Academy)

CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) - Awarded on successful completion of the Crisis Intervention Officer course.

Community Relations Bureau - Worn by members of the Community Relations Bureau, and attached officers.

Long Service Ribbon - Awarded at 15, 20, 30 years service. 15 years is plain ribbon, 20 years is ribbon with bronze leaf, 30 is ribbon with silver leaf.

Lifesaving Ribbon - Awarded following a meritorious attempt, whether successful or not to save the life of a person.

Barlow Award - originally presented by Chief of Police Ian Barlow, for the complete shutdown of a drugs cartel in 1981, this ribbon is awarded to all officers who assist in the successful conviction of a Serious Drug Supply Syndicate (Cocaine/MDMA)

Hanoishi Award - awarded for exceptional service to the community. Usually awarded following numerous letters of appreciations from community members/leaders.

Officer of the Year - awarded to officers voted by their colleagues and superiors as officer of the year. One officer from the Department is awarded this per year. More than one award is denoted by a bronze cluster for each additional year, and a silver cluster for each group of five years.
